Her Story – Vasfije K. Goodman

Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman

I’m Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman. I was born and grew up in Kosovo. My parents, siblings and I lived in a small Village where it was mostly Albanians. Life was easy back then. We were happy with what we had until Serbians started to mess with Albanians and put our lives at risk. I had a good childhood for the most part like all the other kids in Kosovo. I went through a war.

The Adduction and Rapes

At the age of 16, I was abducted by a Serbian Police officer. A police officer broke into the house and took me away from my family as my mom was begging him to take her and not me. He dragged me from my hair into the back seat of his car. My mom was left there helpless crying and screaming, my aunt, uncle and 3 cousins all witnessed it. No one could do anything to save me. We were unarmed. He had an AK47 and a butcher knife. He threatened them that if they made one move he would kill us all.

He took me to a Serbian Village and raped me brutally inside of his car. He would put his knife next to my through if I started to cry. I went in and out of consciousness a couple of times and he still was on top of me. When he got done he stopped at a store and left me in the car, where another old mag came took me to a house and raped me as well. I was left back in the car traumatized. I begged and begged to be killed but he told me “you will suffer more this way” he was right, I been suffering with this for the last 19 years. April 14th is a day I will never forget until my last breath. When they took me back home I found my mom sitting outside crying like a broken mother. We left the house that night to hide in my mountains and did not return until the war ended in June of 99.

I went years and years without talking to anyone other that authorities like Police and the United Nations. I fought for justice from1999-2014 but the supreme court let them walk away free for lack of evidence. I’m one of 20,000 women raped who has been to court for rape crimes.

My family never got me any kind of counseling or anything like that they never talked about what happened even though they all knew. In 2010 I decided to break the silence and told all of them the details of what has happened, but even now they still lack-on supporting me and tell me to just move.

At the age of 18, I met an American man who got me pregnant at 18 and he was 33. I moved to US in 2001 to give birth to my oldest daughter I had her at 19. From 2001-2012 I was a stay at home mom and took care of kids and moved back and forth from Kosovo to US few times. I had my 2nd daughter in 2007. Filed for a divorce from my first husband and raised my children alone. I changed few jobs between 2012-2018. Currently I work as an Insurance Agent. I got remarried to my now husband in Oct of 2016.
