Guest Speaker- Karen J. Bryson
Ms. Karen Bryson is a rising third-year Staff Attorney at Texas RioGande Legal Aid. She works on a project called LASSA, Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault. LASSA provides survivors of sexual assault with a wide-range of free legal services from general advice to holistic, direct representation on civil legal matters. Karen focuses on Family Law and also serves on the Education team for LASSA, taking on Title IX, guardianship, and education policy compliance issues. She received her Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law where she served as the Upstate Sub-Regional Director for the Northeast Black Law Students Association (NEBLSA) for 2015-2016 and sat on NEBLSA’s regional board. Karen also served as a research assistant to Professor Paula Johnson, the co-director of the Cold Case Justice Initiative (CCJI) where she lead the charge for the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act, which was Passed by Congress in 2016.
In 2015, Karen was awarded the Earle K. Moore Fellowship and was the Earle K. Moore law fellow with the Multicultural Media Telecom and Internet Counsel (MMTC). Prior to Law school, Karen served as an AmeriCorps VISTA. She graduated with honors from Howard University, where she obtained her Bachelors of Science in Psychology. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Karen is currently a member of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and she holds a position on the Strategic Planning committee for the Collin County Council on Family Violence. She is an art enthusiast and is learning conversational Spanish.
